My favorite local band here and I'm truly honored to offer their debut album as my debut release on Show and Tell Music. The MP3s speak for themselves but I'll add briefly that Julie and Jessica made a record that has continued to find its way to my player again and again and again - a rare occurence around here. The songs that shine here are as lovely as I've heard in the homemade sleepytime girl harmony dept and their low-fi power anthems should inspire ladies and gents 'round the globe to get out the there and rock what you got. If you're in the Bay Area, visit their website and come hear 'em play live.

Here's a copy of their official press release for those interested:

Pillows is a duo from Oakland, CA. Formerly of the Run for Cover Lovers, Julia Shirar (guitar, drums, sound effects, and vocals) and Jessica Cowley (guitar, drums, bass and vocals) have played as Pillows for two years, though they’ve only shared the same coast for one. Now that the dust has settled, their first record, Two Step, will be released by Show and Tell Music on February 28, 2006.

Having built his empire reissuing endangered 60s & 70s obscurities on his other labels Companion and Thrift Score, Will Louviere and Show and Tell Music are happy to introduce Two Step as their first modern release.

Two Step was recorded in the band’s now-condemned Magnolia Street Studios in West Oakland in the summer of 2004 by Pillows, and was mixed by Richard Beggs, former radio and rock-n-roll guy, now sound designer and mixer for feature film.

Pillows’ personal musical influences include the Texas plains, broken-down city landscapes, Roberta Flack, old musicals, love, death, taxes, crop dusters, Blondie, Molly Hatchet, road trips, the Velvet Underground, and shitty cars with broken stereos.

Pillows plans to tour in support of Two Step and record their second album in the first half of 2006.

ADVANCE PRAISE FOR TWO STEP:

“Stripped-bare melodies wander through modes of naïve bubblegum pop, campfire folk, raunchy rock, and snarly punk, never staying long enough to call any place home. Tenderly stark like an old bedtime story, Pillows are dreamy, not sleepy.” -Liz Armstrong of the Chicago Reader

“Pillows charts those beautiful, schizophrenic pre-dawn hours when we teeter between giving in to sleep and tearing up the walls.” -Chris Baty of the East Bay Express

“Their music has a naked, no-frills honesty on top of a sound that’s pretty as hell.” -Rebecca Johnson, Performer
