Marc Mundy
Tomarc Music Co. Inc., 1971

My last girlfriend, who grew to adore this album, didn't feel that way at first. It was painful for her, made her uncomfortable. I understood the reasons why. Mundy's an outsider, in the everyday sense, a Mid-East transplant with the densest of accents, unselfconsciously forging ahead with a collection of songs that hadn't the slightest hope of reaching 70's U.S. pop audiences. His vocalizations were quite literally too "foreign" for most Westerners to gain access. This cultural hurdle combined with an unflinching earnestness in delivering his tragic tales of lost love will undoubtably leave many a first time modern listener feeling a little unsettled. At least at first. This wasn't the case for me at all, quite the opposite, the very first time I heard this I was as transfixed as I was perplexed, and very deeply moved. And I beleive any and all adventurous, well-travelled music fans with sensitive antennae or an ear for offbeat psychedelic-era recordings will fawn over this one just as I have.

A CD reissue of this privately-issued obscurity has just come back from the printers and is available through Companion Records. See our web site for more info and MP3s. This one comes very highly recommended.
